“My father would say, ‘son you just don’t see it.’ What’s to see, I would respond. ‘It’s in the horizon line.’ Didn’t get it. Flip forward 10 years…I’m a senior in the University of Illinois…and as always the case…photography was in the basement of the basement and as I went down the stairs…above the transom was a long panorama of the Illinois landscape. I looked at it and said, oh my god, what a beauty, that’s what my father was fucking talking about.” Charlie Traub has an amazing life and career in photography. He has been the MFA Chair of Photography, Video, and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts for almost three decades and that started after he helped transform the photography department at Columbia College in Chicago and after he had been the director of the famous Light Gallery in NYC. All the while he has been making work, publishing books, having shows, writing about photography, and staying open to new ideas and ways of photographing. Part 1 starts out with Charlie’s tumultuous beginnings that led him to his career in photography.
